Frequently Asked Questions
What is Soft Washing?
Soft washing is a gentle cleaning method that uses low water pressure combined with specialized cleaning solutions to safely remove dirt, mold, mildew, algae, lichen and other organic stains from your exterior surfaces like roofs, siding, and decks, without causing damage, unlike traditional high-pressure washing
Why should I have my asphalt roof cleaned?
Keeping your roof clean and free of organic growth is rudimentary to lengthening the lifespan of your roof. Cleaning the roof helps remove harmful elements such as roof moss and mildew, compromising your roof’s integrity and structure. Moss can cause the edges of the shingles to curl up and be more prone to blowing off in windy weather. It can also reduce the reflectiveness of the roof and interfere with performance of the shingles. Organic growth roots loosen the granules and feed on the lyme found in asphalt shingles. This is the only approved method by the Asphalt Shingles Manufacturer Association.
Will soft washing my roof void the manufacturers warranty on my shingles?
Pressure washing your shingles can significantly reduce the life of your asphalt single roof according to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA). It can also void the roof warranty. The surface of your shingle is manufactured with ceramic coated granules that are the wearing surface of the shingle. Look in the gutters of a roof that has been pressure washed and you will find a significant accumulation of these granules which are the life of your shingle. Enough are dislodged by rain and snow so you definitely don’t want to speed up the loss of these granules. This is why we use the Soft Wash process to clean and replenish a shingle roof and adhere to manufacturers warranty conditions.
Will your cleaning solutions hurt my plants, pets, or children?
While a soft wash on your house is considered very safe for plants, pets, and children when done properly, it's important for us to take precautions as the cleaning solutions can be harmful if they come into direct contact. We advise clients to keep children and pets away from the treated area until it is fully dry and rinsed thoroughly. We also protect sensitive plants and grass by pre-watering them before, during, and after the soft wash application. You may notice some browning of grass along the edges of flat areas or where downspouts drain, this is completely normal and will return to green within a few weeks. If your downspouts drop near sensitive plants or flowers we will bag them to prevent any damage and dispose of the solution properly.
